Crail Balcomie: A New Artistic Approach
"Centuries of golf has been played over these beautiful old links; long before the days of formal rules, mechanised mowers and metal cups. Much of the course as it is enjoyed today was laid out in 1895 by the master himself, Old Tom Morris. Balcomie is one of Scotland's golfing gems, it's a must-play course for members and visitors alike."
Crail Balcomie Links is a historic Scottish golf course, designed by Old Tom Morris and established in 1895. Located in Fife, it offers a true links experience with stunning coastal views and a deep connection to golfing heritage. Playing there in the summer was a fantastic experience and has inspired my latest artistic project.
The Course and Its Features
With its rugged coastline, rolling fairways, and steady sea breeze, Crail Balcomie is both a test of skill and a visual spectacle. The par-4 fifth, ‘Hell’s Hole,’ is a highlight, while the final stretch along the shoreline offers some of the most striking scenery in Scottish golf. Its blend of history, landscape, and challenge makes it an ideal subject for my work.
A New Artistic Approach
For this project, I’m combining screen printing, hand-drawn elements, and expressive painting to create layered, detailed representations of the course. This approach allows me to highlight its defining features while also capturing the movement and atmosphere of the landscape.
I want to reflect the experience of playing there—the wind shaping every shot, the light shifting across the fairways, and the rugged textures of the links. The mix of precision and expressive strokes will ensure each piece feels dynamic and true to the course.
Bringing Golfing Heritage to Life
This series isn’t just about depicting Crail Balcomie; it’s about celebrating its character and legacy. By merging traditional and modern techniques, I aim to create work that resonates with golfers and art enthusiasts alike.
I’ll be sharing updates on my process, including behind-the-scenes insights and previews of the finished pieces. If you’re interested in golf, art, or Scotland’s incredible landscapes, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Stay tuned for the first reveal of my Crail Balcomie collection soon!
